Recommended calibration

For the main types of instruments that can be calibrated at the Calibration Centre, Comecer recommends the following types of calibration.

The ranges of radiation refer to the Table of beams and sources.

Instruments with ionisation chamber for the measurement of the direct beam of radiogenic machines.

  • Calibration with A, L or P range beams according to the features of the radiogenic machine (ACCREDIA certificate)

Instruments used to control the quality of the radiogenic machines

  • Calibration is doses with beams from the QR range at value of about 3 mGy (ACCREDIA certificate)
  • Calibration in kV at values of 28 kV for mammography; 70 kV; 90 kV; 120 kV (COMECER report)
  • Time calibration to the value of about 500 ms (COMECER report)

Instruments used to control the protective barriers

  • Beams of the S range if using radiogenic machines (ACCREDIA certificate)
  • Point-source radiation of Am 241, Cs 137, Co 60 if about nuclear medicine laboratories (ACCREDIA certificate)

Instruments with ionisation chamber for the measurement of the direct beam of gamma sources.

  • Point-source radiation of 241, Cs 137, Co 60 (ACCREDIA certificate)

Instruments used to control scrap

  • Point-source radiation of Am 241, Cs 137, Co 60 if the instrument measures the exposure, the kerma in air or the dose equivalent (ACCREDIA certificate)
  • Extended sources with Alpha, Beta, Gamma emissions (the choice depends of the features of the probe) if the instrument measures the surface emission or the activity (COMECER report)

Calibration of dosimeters with the use of ISO phantoms

  • Check the energy response curve with X and gamma radiation beams using X beams from the A and L range and gamma sources of Cs 137 and Co 60 (ACCREDIA certificate)
  • Check the deep dose equivalent response curve with X and gamma radiation beams using X beams from the A and L range and gamma sources of Cs 137 and Co 60 (ACCREDIA certificate)
  • Check the surface dose equivalent response curve with X gamma radiation beams using X beams from the A and L range (ACCREDIA certificate)

Calibration of instruments used to measure activity

  • Extended sources with Alpha, Beta, Gamma emission (COMECER report)
  • Liquid sources in vials with gamma emission of Co 60, Co 57, Cs 137 and Na 22 (COMECER certificate)
